Fran Tarkenton

1962 Topps #90 base

Black borders give Fran Tarkenton's 1962 Topps #90 its character and its condition problem. The horizontal rookie has plenty to discuss before scarcity enters the conversation: a scrambling quarterback, a two-image layout and edges that show wear readily.^{2, 3, 4}

PSA — Fran Tarkenton exact card and historical context

Identification

The exact issue is Fran Tarkenton, 1962 Topps #90, base. Match that full identity when comparing copies.²

Why This Card Matters

Number 90 is Tarkenton's recognized rookie in the black-bordered 1962 Topps set. Its identification does not depend on settling the conflicting short-print descriptions found in later hobby references.^{2, 3, 4}

Player Legacy

Fran Tarkenton made an immediate impression in Minnesota, throwing four touchdown passes in his first NFL game in 1961. His movement outside the pocket became a signature part of his game, but the career record was much more than improvisation. He played 18 seasons, first with Minnesota, then the New York Giants, and then the Vikings again. By retirement he had accumulated 47,003 passing yards and 342 touchdown passes, records at that time. He was selected to nine Pro Bowls, won the 1975 NFL MVP award and led Minnesota to three Super Bowls, without winning one. The Pro Football Hall of Fame inducted him in 1986. His 1962 Topps rookie sits close to the start of that story, giving the familiar later-career quarterback an early Vikings setting.^{1, 2}

Card and Set Context

The set uses a large color portrait beside a smaller action inset. A researcher quoted in PSA's set article identifies Tarkenton's inset as Sonny Jurgensen with an altered uniform number; treat that as an attributed identification, not a newly verified photographic fact.^{3, 4}

Collector Context

A Vikings rookie collection has a clear slot for #90. Keep short-print assertions qualified: the PSA set description calls it a short print, while a researcher in a separate PSA article disputes that designation.^{3, 4}

Grading and Condition

Examine the black edges for chipping and the corners for color loss. Back photographs also matter, especially when a holder or a tightly cropped front image makes the card appear more uniform than it is.²

What to Verify

Let the black edges and full layout be visible. If a seller adds short print to the title, treat it as a claim to investigate, not a reason to bypass the conflicting references or the card's condition.^{2, 3, 4}
