Jean Beliveau1953-54 Parkhurst #27

Béliveau’s larger-format Parkhurst rookie puts edge color and portrait quality in plain view.

Jean Béliveau captained Montreal for the last ten years of his career and won ten Stanley Cups as a player. Parkhurst #27 offers an early image for a collection built around that career. The size of the card and the way its edges have aged both matter when choosing one to display.

The taller 1953–54 issue

Parkhurst’s 100-card set moved to approximately 2½ by 3⅝ inches. The cards are taller than the familiar modern 3½-inch format and larger than Parkhurst’s previous issues. Allow room for the card when choosing a sleeve or display. If a seller crops the edges out of a photograph, request the complete card beside an appropriate scale before assessing its proportions. 1 2

The player behind the card

Béliveau recorded 34 points in 44 games for Montreal in the season named on #27. That early line gives a collector a starting point before the captaincy described elsewhere in the guide. 5

Look for the boundary of the toning

PSA specifically identifies edge toning on Béliveau’s rookie. Compare how far the discoloration extends into the design and whether it is concentrated on one edge. Ask for a photograph in even light with a neutral background. A warm lamp can alter the apparent color of the whole scan, making it hard to judge the boundary of the toning from the image alone. 2

Choose between two worn examples

For a display copy, put a card with even edge toning beside one with cleaner margins and a crease through the portrait. Which pulls your eye away from Béliveau first? Use that choice to set your own condition priorities, then compare transactions for the corresponding grade. For a set, Parkhurst’s #27 can also sit alongside Maurice Richard #24 in the same release. 2 1

Collector questions

How much room should the holder allow?

The cataloged size is about 2½ by 3⅝ inches. Choose protection sized for that taller issue and avoid forcing the card into a tight pocket.

What is a useful way to compare toned cards?

Compare photographs under similar light, including the whole edge. Judge how much the discoloration affects the design in the area you care about.
