Two Gretzky rookies carry #18. Turn the card over before you study the corners. On the 1979–80 Topps issue, the language and copyright on the back give you a firmer starting point than the familiar Oilers image on the front.
Read the back first
PSA identifies the Topps reverse by its English text, its Topps copyright line and its darker background relative to O-Pee-Chee. Ask for a straight-on photograph large enough to read the copyright. Lighting can shift the apparent shade, so use the text and imprint together. On a graded example, check the edition on the holder against that photograph. 1
The player behind the card
The 1979–80 Oilers line belongs to Gretzky’s first NHL season. The distinction matters for Topps #18 because his professional career with Edmonton had already begun in another league. 6
He first played professionally for the Indianapolis Racers of the WHA, who traded him to Edmonton after eight games. 7

A place for #18 in a set
The 264-card Topps set includes Edmonton and the other three former WHA clubs that entered the NHL. Gretzky had already played for the WHA Oilers. Card #18 marks his first NHL season with Edmonton and can anchor a collection of the full Topps set. Choose the blue border you want to look at
White chips stand out against the blue. PSA also notes left-to-right centering and print defects on this card. Compare two similarly graded copies at the same image size. Look first at the widths of the side borders, then at any chip or spot that draws your eye away from Gretzky. A small chip near a corner may bother you less than a spotless card with the photo pushed hard to one side. 1
