Chipper Jones1991 Topps Desert Shield #333
The gold foil emblem is the heart of this 1991 issue and its hardest authentication question.
Chipper Jones’s #333 looks familiar for a reason. PSA describes Desert Shield as a specially prepared version of the 1991 Topps set. On a card where the underlying design is shared, the small stamped emblem carries an extraordinary amount of the collecting decision.
Find the right mark
The 792-card Desert Shield set used a gold foil logo on the front, and packs were prepared for troops in the Middle East. PSA identifies Jones #333 as the rookie card that anchors the set. A standard 1991 Topps #333 is a useful design reference. The Desert Shield attribution calls for a separate examination of the stamp. 1
The player behind the card
Jones’s 1991 Desert Shield card predates his major-league debut. His first Atlanta appearances came in September 1993, and he had only three at-bats that season. There is no 1991 MLB batting line to put beside #333. 5

Examine the stamp before the corners
Get a sharply focused close-up of the emblem and a second image showing it in its position on the entire card. PSA describes differences between genuine and forged stamps in the shape of the shield and details of the palm and flag. Treat those as reasons for a closer examination. A single matching feature can give a false sense of certainty, especially when the seller supplies only a compressed photograph. 2
Compare copies after authentication
One PSA 9 copy sold at Fanatics Collect on May 12, 2025, for $2,010 including buyer’s premium. PSA lists a different PSA 9 eBay auction on August 30, 2026, at $4,676.85. The dates are more than a year apart, and the latter is a provider-reported result. For a purchase today, look for more recent transactions with clear photographs before drawing a price range from those two observations. 3 4

Collector questions
What should I request for an expensive ungraded example?
Ask for the full front and back plus a close view of the stamp. If attribution determines most of the price, independent authentication is worth resolving before purchase.
Does a gold-colored logo establish the edition?
Color alone leaves the shape, detail and application of the mark unresolved. Compare the emblem with an authenticated example of the same issue.
