Hank Bauer / Yogi Berra / Mickey Mantle

1953 Bowman Color #44 base

Three Yankees, one dugout step. Bowman Color #44 is a team scene first, even if Mantle's name is the one that initially draws the eye. Bauer and Berra belong in the identification and in the story; cutting them out turns a distinctive card into a misleading single-player listing.^{2, 3}

Identification

The exact issue is Hank Bauer / Yogi Berra / Mickey Mantle, 1953 Bowman Color #44, base. Match that full identity when comparing copies.^{2, 3}

Why This Card Matters

The photograph includes Bauer, Berra and Mantle, with only Mantle's head and arm visible. That composition is part of the card's personality; it should not be cropped into an imaginary full Mantle portrait.^{2, 3}

Player Legacy

Hank Bauer reached the Yankees after serving in the Marines during World War II. He made his major-league debut in 1948 and won seven World Series championships as a New York player, later managing Baltimore to its 1966 title. Yogi Berra's playing career brought 10 World Series championships and three American League MVP awards; the catcher entered the Hall of Fame in 1972. Mickey Mantle, the younger teammate in this photograph, was becoming a familiar Yankees presence after arriving in 1951. Together they give #44 a broader story than a single-star portrait. Bauer represents an established outfielder, Berra the catcher at the heart of the club, and Mantle the early-career star. The photograph lets a collector keep those teammates in the same frame, rather than reconstructing the connection from three separate cards.^{2, 4, 1}

Card and Set Context

PSA describes #44 as one of the set's early multi-player photographs. Bowman Color also pairs Billy Martin and Phil Rizzuto on #93, giving a team-scene collection another distinct checklist entry.³

Collector Context

File #44 under the full trio, even when a marketplace title leads with Mantle. It can serve a Yankees team collection or a multi-player-card project without borrowing the identity of an individual Mantle portrait.³

Grading and Condition

Check that listing images show the entire card, including all three players, before examining borders and surface. Cropping can conceal both condition and what makes the photograph distinctive.^{2, 3}

What to Verify

Keep all three Yankees in the listing image and all three names in the collection record. Number 44 loses its point when a crop or a title turns the dugout group into a supposed single-player portrait.^{2, 3}
