Pee Wee Reese

1953 Bowman Color #33 base

Pee Wee Reese is airborne on 1953 Bowman Color #33, and that is the point. The image makes a fielding play the attraction, giving a Brooklyn collection something livelier than another posed portrait. Focus matters here as much as a tidy border.²

Identification

The exact issue is Pee Wee Reese, 1953 Bowman Color #33, base. Match that full identity when comparing copies.²

Why This Card Matters

PSA treats the leaping image as a hobby classic and identifies centering and focus as key obstacles. The collecting pleasure is in seeing the play clearly, not merely acquiring the player name on a label.²

Player Legacy

Pee Wee Reese spent his major-league playing career with the Dodgers, becoming a regular in 1941 after arriving the previous year. Three seasons in the Navy interrupted his career during World War II. Back in Brooklyn, he helped anchor the infield through a period of repeated pennant races and the long-awaited 1955 World Series championship. He was selected to 10 All-Star teams and contributed far beyond one skill: walks, runs, stolen bases and steady work at shortstop all feature in his record. His nickname came from his childhood success at marbles, rather than simply from his size. That small biographical detail suits a player remembered for much more than a statistical category. On #33, the active shortstop is the story; the photograph connects the name to the work he did on the field.^{1, 2}

Card and Set Context

The photograph was taken in spring training. PSA discusses competing interpretations of the runner's movement, so the image should not be sold as proof of a definitively identified regular-season play.²

Collector Context

An image-driven vintage collection can make room for #33 on its own terms. Brooklyn team builders get Reese in action; Bowman Color builders get a photograph that makes the set's visual approach especially easy to appreciate.²

Grading and Condition

Look for a sharp image and balanced borders before comparing holder grades. A technically stronger copy can still have a less satisfying photograph if the focus is soft.²

What to Verify

Before choosing a copy, enlarge the leaping figure. If the focus is soft, a clean border will not restore the detail that makes #33 enjoyable to look at.²
