Kobe Bryant1996-97 Bowman's Best #R23

Preserve the letter in R23 and check the finish before comparing Kobe’s Bowman's Best rookie.

The R in R23 is useful information when cataloging Kobe Bryant’s Bowman’s Best rookie. Dropping it makes a precise search less effective. The full number gets you into the right group, and the finish identifies which member of that group belongs in the collection.

Distinguish the base from both Refractors

The base rookie, Refractor and Atomic Refractor each use R23. Bowman’s Best also has a separate Best Picks Kobe numbered BP10. Write down the full set, number and variety, then check the holder description and back of the card. An impressive reflective surface on its own is a poor substitute for a complete variety match. 2 1

The player behind the card

Bryant was 13th in the 1996 draft and started just six games for the Lakers that season. The rookie prefix on R23 fits that part of his story: the card came well before he became an every-night starter. 6 7

Decide what the grade buys

PSA records a mint nine of the base R23 with a $290 estimate in its saved certificate reference. Separately, its similar-item history for a gem mint ten reports a November 2, 2026 Fanatics Collect auction at $1,260. The first figure is an estimate and the second is a reported auction result. Use them to identify two price tiers worth investigating, then compare actual recent sales within each tier. 3 1

Inspect the copy you would keep

For a front-facing display, look at color consistency and centering from a straight-on image. A second, oblique view can reveal fine lines masked by the bright design. If a surface mark appears, ask whether it is on the plastic or the card. For a set run, decide whether a clean-looking nine meets your goal before making the jump to gem mint. 1 4
