Kobe Bryant1996-97 E-X2000 #30

A clear cloud background makes the E-X2000 rookie easy to recognize. Credentials still needs a separate identification check.

Kobe’s E-X2000 #30 rewards a collector who likes the construction of a card as much as its player photograph. SkyBox placed a cutout player image inside a frame over a transparent cloud design. The background behind the card in a seller’s photograph can change how the card itself looks.

Check the frame and wording

The base issue shares #30 with Credentials. The Credentials parallel carries its name at the upper right, has a pearl foil border and is numbered to 499. Ask for a front image large enough to read the wording and a complete reverse image. Then compare the actual card with the right PSA entry before discussing price. 2 1

The player behind the card

Bryant played 71 games in his first Lakers season, mostly coming off the bench. The layered E-X2000 design gives that early chapter a very different look from his paper Topps issue of the same year. 5 6

Look through the clear areas

Ask for photographs against both light and dark backgrounds. A mark that follows the card when the background changes deserves closer inspection. Examine the frame, corners and the boundary of the player image for wear or surface damage. With a slabbed copy, distinguish a mark on the holder from one on the card before you decide how much it affects display appeal. 2 3

Avoid the Credentials price column

In PSA’s saved set guide, the base #30 has references of $425 at PSA 8 and $1,450 at PSA 9. Credentials has a separate row at the same card number. Those guide figures are reference points, and the row separation matters more than the exact amount when first sorting listings. Compare current completed base examples in the grade you intend to buy. 1

Collector questions

Is the transparent construction proof of Credentials?

Both are E-X2000 cards. Look for the Credentials wording, border and numbering when identifying that parallel.

Which part of the card merits a second photograph?

The transparent background and the frame around the player. Two contrasting backgrounds can reveal details a single scan hides.
